Cycling challenge to raise awareness for kidney diseases: 500 km in 24 hours
Saturday July 1st, 32 teams took on a great challenge: the Coast to Coast Challenge in The Netherlands. The teams had to cycle 500 km from Zoutkamp to Zoutelande in 24 hours. The start and finish where not chosen randomly: zout means “salt” in Dutch. The challenge was organized by the Dutch Kidney Foundation to raise awareness for the effect of excessive intake of salt on the kidneys. More than € 120.000 was raised to support CKD research.
Two participants with only one kidney completed the full 500km. Some consortium members participated in the challenge as well. Hiddo Lambers Heerspink ended up riding close to 300km. At the same time the same challenge took place in the south of Italy from Naples to Bari. About 80 people participated, of which coworkers of partner CLV. Wouldn’t it be great to have a PRIME-CKD team next year? Let’s start training now and we’ll share information about the Coast to Coast Challenge 2024 soon!
